About Sam Russell

I am a fifth-generation retired Army officer with twenty-nine years of commissioned service. I have been researching the frontier Army for over eighteen years and am interested in documenting the lives of the soldiers that participated in the battle of Wounded Knee using primarily official reports, diaries, letters, newspaper articles and other primary source documents. My interest in Wounded Knee stems from my kinship to one of the principal participants. I am the great-great-grandson of Samuel M. Whitside, who was a major and battalion commander at the battle. I welcome and encourage comments on posts and pages and am always interested in any new primary sources. If you have copies of letters, diaries, etc, from participants and are willing to share, please contact me. Where is the best place to post a question? It is about the 7th, just another battle, or possible battle. I heard about one and have a question about it, but not sure where to post the question.

My great grandfather Nick Nelson was a Cavalry man in the 7th in the 1890s. His discharge papers state that he was in several Indian engagements. He also served in Cuba in the Spanish American War. I was hoping he was not among those at Wounded Knee. Where can I find more information on his service record?

Douglas… Based on the 7th Cavalry Muster Rolls dated 31 Dec 1890 for the eight troops that were engaged at Wounded Knee, there was no trooper in the regiment with the last name of Nelson. If you can provide me a bit more information about your ancestor (date and place of birth, place of enlistment) I can probably find more about his time in the Army.

Douglas… Nick Nelson did not join the Army until July 1893 more than two and a half years after Wounded Knee. He served in F Troop, 7th Cavalry before becoming a trumpeter in the 3rd Artillery. His Chicago enlistment record lists him as a 21-year-old laborer from Lund, Sweden, with blue eyes, light hair, a fair complexion, standing 5 feet 4 1/2 inches, and assigned to 3rd Artillery and 7th Cavalry, discharged Oct. 12, 1896, under General Order 80 at Fort Grant, Arizona Territory, a trumpeter with an excellent characterization of service. He enlisted again in January 1897 at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and was assigned to A Battery, 2nd Artillery. He completed that three-year enlistment at Columbia Barracks, Cuba, as a corporal, again with an excellent characterization of service.
